Carrie Kelley, 74, of Kelley Gap Road, Greeneville, slipped into a peaceful sleep and went home to be with the Lord Tuesday surrounded by her family at Durham-Hensley Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was a homemaker.
Carrie was a loving wife, mother, and especially grandmother. Nieces, nephews and neighbors alike looked to her as a second mother. She loved each and every child like her own.
Many who passed through her door soon found themselves right at home at Granny's house, where countless memories were made.
Carrie rededicated her life to the Lord in August of 2007 with her special friend, the Rev. Mark Starnes, by her side.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years: Walter Kelley; her children and their spouses: Judy and Danny Garber, Wilma and David Jones, Carolyn Kelley, and Lynn Roberts; her grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Shelia Ricker, Jessica Jones and Jeremy Smith, Samantha Jones and Daniel Elliott, Lindsey Jones, Danny Lynn Garber, and Trina and Larry Garrett; several stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law: Guy and Faye Darnell; a sister-in-law: Gerline Darnell; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Don and Grace Shipley; many nieces and nephews, who were all very special to her; and her special friends: the Rev. Hubert and Doris Metcalf, Buddy Buckner, and Steve and Karen Ricker.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Stephanie Ricker; her parents: David and Clara Wilhoit Darnell; five sisters: Alice Lee Darnell, Sylvia Johnson, Myrtle Shipley, Daisy Parkins, and Zuella Kelley; and five brothers: Junior Darnell, George Darnell, Vance Darnell, Eugene Darnell, and Pearson Darnell.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Hubert Metcalf and the Rev. Buster Shelton will officiate.
Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Friday to go in procession to Prices Cemetery in the Whitesand community for a 10 a.m. committal service.
Pallbearers will be Scott Ricker, Hugh Davis, Jerry Darnell, Junior Kelley, Danny Lynn Garber, Brian Darnell, Lynn Roberts, and David Jones.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Shaw, Dr. Ken Nickels, the wonderful nurses and staff of Durham-Hensley and Amedisys Hospice Group, the many clients at Durham-Hensley that stopped by to check on her, and the congregation of New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church.
