James R. Heiny, age 89, of Greeneville, died late Friday evening at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville.
Mr. Heiny was born in 1923 to the late John A. and Helen Follis Heiny in Fort Wayne, Ind., and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Fort Wayne.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was a veteran of World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
He graduated from St. Joseph College in 1946 and married his childhood sweetheart, Joan Klingenberger.
Mr. Heiny moved to Greeneville in 1967 with his wife and three children.
He retired from Philips-Magnavox in 1987 after 34 years of service.
Mr. Heiny was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Greeneville for 44 years and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.
Survivors include three children: Dr. Jerome Heiny and his wife, Barbara (Pack), of Maryville, and Jane Heiny Miller of Maryville, and Jay Heiny and his wife, Kathleen (Murphy), of Oakland, N.J.; nine grandchildren: Christopher Heiny and his wife, Dr. Meredith Stepita, Stephen Heiny and his wife, "Rita" Jia Liu Heiny, Timothy Heiny, Patrick Heiny and his wife, Eileen Walker Heiny, Nicholas Heiny, Gannon Hyland, Matthew Miller, Alex Miller, and Heather Battleson and her husband, Dean; five great-grandchildren: Taylor Lincous, Zach Battleson, Madeline Heiny, Clare Heiny and Patrick John Heiny; two brothers: Tom and Jorene Heiny of Fort Wayne and Dick and Orla Heiny of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law: Rita Klingenberger and Dick Curtis of Rome City, Ind., and Margaret Klingenberger of Fort Wayne.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Heiny was preceded in death by his wife: Joan Jane Klingenberger Heiny; and two brothers: Eugene Heiny and John Heiny.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Greeneville. The Rev. Jim Harvey will officiate. Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
The Heiny family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home. A Christian prayer service and rosary will follow visitation at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
Pallbearers will be family and the members of the Knights of Columbus.
