Died: Jan. 10, 2013

BULLS GAP -- Hubert C. Barker, 88, of Bulls Gap, born Oct. 2, 1924, passed away Wednesday at Heritage Center.

He was a member of Bulls Gap Baptist Church for 57 years, where he was the oldest surviving deacon, prior to his death.

Mr. Barker retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, where he worked for 32 years.

He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for service during World War II, where he served in the 513th Parachute Infantry Division, Company E.

He was a member of the Bulls Gap Lodge No. 764, F&AM, and VFW Post No. 9683, and the American Legion, Post No. 21.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years: Lorraine Haun Barker; parents: Lewis and Emma Barker; sisters: Mildred Barker, and Imogene Welch; and brothers: Earl and Lewis Barker.

He is survived by a son: Sheridan (Vicki) Barker of Talbott; grandson: Bradley Barker of Morristown; granddaughter: Lauren (Joshua) Spivey; great-granddaughters: Ella Grace and Addie Joy Spivey; and several nieces and nephews, including: Linda (Walt) Plankenhorn, Emma Welch, Martha Wade, and Janice Calilung and Stan Welch, Andrew Plankenhorn, and David Barker.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Bulls Gap Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Stan Welch will officiate.

Family and friends will meet in McCullough Cemetery on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. for an 11 a.m. committal service.
