Velva King Hopson, 84, of McCoy Road in the Greystone community, passed away Saturday at Laughlin Health Care Center.
She was a member of Greystone Free Will Baptist Church.
She was a kind, gentle woman; small in stature, with a gigantic heart. She was loved by all who knew her She loved her Lord, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the joy of her life.
She had a servant's heart, and it showed in all she said and did. Never thinking of herself, she cared for her bedridden daughter, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, for 17 years.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Verna Geraldine and Roy Weems; grandchildren: Jamie Shetley, Pamela and Mike Karriker, Melissa and Shane Tweed, and David and Becky Thompson; stepgrandchildren: Les and Angie Weems, Lynn and Lisa Weems, Gary Shetley, and James Shetley; great-grandchildren: Ryan Thompson, Daniel Shelton and Alex Shelton, Gracie, Madison, Isabelle, and Michael Sam Karriker; stepgreat-grandchildren: Katelyn Weems, Michael and Britney Campbell, Heather Shetley, Jason Shetley, and Chelsea and Trenton Tweed; special friends: Michael Kelley, Karen and Steven Stroud, Heather Treadway (her caregiver), Sharon Burgner, June Brown, and Sherry Sauceman; sister: Ettie Hensley Carter of Washington County; and numerous nieces and nephews, including special nieces and spouses: Coleena and Billy Squib of Robstown, Texas, Patsy and Kyle Ripley of Charleston, S.C., Carolyn and Frank Roper of Jacksonville, Fla., Marie Gibson, and Pat Mercer.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years: Othor William Hopson; one daughter: Regina Shetley; an infant granddaughter: Lori Ann Fellers; parents: Landon and Delphia King; five sisters: Ester Roberts, Tennie Hensley, Ida Mae Evans, Lou Hammer, and Sylvia Colston; five brothers: Orville, Clyde, Clinton, Ludie, and Franklin King; and her son-in-law: Walter James Shetley.
A special thanks is extended to the staffs of the East Wing at Laughlin Health Care, Amedisys Hospice, and 4-East Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Roger Stocton will officiate.
Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home to go in procession to Greystone Cemetery for an 11 a.m. committal service.
Pallbearers will be Daniel McCaslin, Zahnnie McCaslin, Carson Wallin, Vernon Jennings, Calvin Hawkins, and Donnie Wright.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joe Austin and nurse, Vickie; Dr. Rodney Holladay; friends, and family.
