Died: Jan. 29, 2013

The Rev. Melvin H. Shelton Jr., 90, of the Camp Creek community, passed away early Tuesday morning at his home.

He was associate pastor at Horse Creek Church of God from 1973 to 1989 and became senior pastor in 1989, serving until 2003.

He was a home builder in Greene County for a number of years and enjoyed fishing and hunting as hobbies.

Rev. Shelton sang on WGRV radio for about 40 years with the Friendly Four Quartet and traveled and sang in churches in the southeast with the Shelton Trio as long as his health permitted.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Jimmie and Darlis Shelton of Afton, and Doug and Marcia Shelton of Covington, Ga.; a daughter: Janice Shaw of Camp Creek; six grandchildren: Terry Shelton and wife Denise, Danny Shelton and wife Julie, Angelia Stine and husband Mike, Melanie Nickerson, Brandon Shelton and wife April, and Ashley Elarbee; six great-grandchildren: Melissa Chaney, Michael Shelton, Jennifer Cranor and husband Nate, Brycen Nye, Trey Nickerson, and Dahlia Shelton; three great-great-grandchildren: Darren Chaney, Trenton Chaney and Aubrey Cranor; and three sisters: Vera Lee Dixon, Nellie Davis, and Evelyn Murdock, and a brother: Walter Shelton, all of Greene County.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Sudie and the Rev. Melvin Shelton Sr.; his wife: Hazel Davis Shelton; one sister: Lovada Chandley; and one brother: David Shelton.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service, Afton Chapel.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Horse Creek Church of God with interment in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. The Rev. Bobby Morrison and the Rev. Willard Wilcox will officiate.

Special music will be provided by Ralph Shelton and Paula and the Rev. Bobby Morrison.

The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Terry Shelton, Danny Shelton, Brandon Shelton, Michael Shelton, Brycen Nye, and Michael Stine.
