Richard Shelton, 85, of Chuckey Highway, Afton, passed away Tuesday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
He drove a transfer truck before retiring in 1978.
He was a Protestant by faith.
Mr. Shelton was a member of VFW, Post No. 1990, and the Chuckey Ruritan Club where he worked hard getting the baseball field fixed.
Survivors include a daughter: Dorothy Shelton of the home; a brother: Manley "Jack" Shelton Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; several special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; two sisters-in-law: Hilda Shelton and Louise Southerland of Greeneville; and his special friends: his Davy Crockett camping buddies.
He was the son of the late Manley and Martha Shelton and was preceded in death by his wife: Bonnie Gay Shelton; a son: Kelso Richard Shelton; brothers: Carson, Loren, Merrill, and Ursie Shelton; and sisters: Madeline Crum, Vertie Fox, and Eva Kozel.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Horse Creek Church of God with interment in Horse Creek Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Hux will officiate.
The family will meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. to go in procession to the church.
Pallbearers will be Gary Shelton, Rickey Shelton, Wayne Southerland, Ralph Bohannon, Dudley Spooner, and David Dotson.
