GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Donald Gene "Don" Murray, 78, resident of Stoney Point Community in Greenwood, husband of Jackie Lowery Murray, died Saturday at AnMed Health Care in Anderson.
Born May 10, 1934, in Limestone, Tenn., he was a son of the late Henry B. and Minnie Crawford Murray.
Mr. Murray was a graduate of Chuckey High School in Chuckey, Tenn., and attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.
He continued his education at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Murray was a former outfielder for the Detroit Tigers Baseball Team and later retired as owner of Murray & Associates of Greenville (S.C.).
He attended Main Street United Methodist Church.
He was an avid golfer and A member of Stoney Point Golf Club.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are his children: Carol Comer and husband, Randy, of Englewood, Ohio, Linda Michaels of Winter Haven, Fla., and Jerry Jones and wife, Brenda, of Lonaconing, Md.; a daughter-in-law: Carol Jones of Lavale, Md.; two sisters: Edna R. Frye of Johnson City and Joyce Hopkins and husband, Jim, of Dayton; 11 grandchildren to include: Sean Coomer and wife, Sandra, of Columbus, Ohio, and Melissa Fox and husband, Steven, of Dayton; and 22 great-grandchildren to include: Jacob, Alyssa and Braeden Fox, all of Columbus, and Gabriel, Collin, and Madelein Coomer, all of Dayton.
He was predeceased by a son: Rick Jones; a brother: Henry Murray Jr.; and two sisters: Mae Jaynes and Pauline Marion.
The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday at Blythe Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Greenwood with the funeral service following at 4:30 in the chapel. The Rev. Phil Thrailkill will officiate.
Family burial will be in M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
