Michael James Cooper

Died: March 26, 2013

Michael James "Big Man" Cooper, age 62, of Bulls Gap, died early Tuesday at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Mr. Cooper and his family left his childhood home of Flint, Mich., where he was born Oct. 14, 1950, to move to the mountains of East Tennessee to enjoy his life and family.

He started working at Friendly Market in the Warrensburg community and eventually took over the business and renamed it Coop's Corner Market.

Mr. Cooper later worked for and retired from Cansler and Associates.

He dedicated his life to helping his family and friends. He enjoyed knife collecting, fishing, camping and being outdoors.

Mr. Cooper served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973 and served on the USS Midway.

He was a member of the Bulls Gap VFW, Rader McCravey Post No. 9683.

He was a loving husband, father and papaw.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife: Sherry Cooper of Bulls Gap; two sons: Donald Cooper of Whittier, Calif., and Michael Cooper II of Bulls Gap; one daughter: Joi and Vincent Hall of Morristown; three grandchildren: twins Sarah and Shayna Mitchell of Morristown and Jeremy Cooper of Mesa, Ariz.; his mother: Arlene Landry of Whittier; sister: Diane and Carmen Cicero of Whittier; and his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his father, Donald Cooper, and grandparents, Manford and Nellie Louch Cooper.

Graveside services for Mr. Cooper will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The Rev. Dwight MacPherson will officiate. The Greene County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Military Honor Team will conduct a military graveside service.

The procession to the cemetery will leave Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home at 1:15 p.m. Monday.
