Virginia Jo Holland Bible, 85, of the Ottway community, passed away Thursday at Laughlin HealthCare Center

Virginia graduated from the former Baileyton High School and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and earned a degree in home economics. She enjoyed playing tennis while attending college.

She worked in Florida and Missouri before returning to Greene County to teach. She taught at the former Ottway High School and transferred to North Greene High School, when Ottway and Baileyton high schools were consolidated.

She retired in 1986 with 37 years of service with the Greene County School System.

Virginia joined Ottway United Methodist Church in 1968 when she moved to the Ottway community upon her marriage. She remained an active member as long as her health permitted.

She was a more than 50-year member of Baileyton Chapter No. 319, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the Women of the Moose, Greeneville Chapter No. 1598.

She was well-known for her outgoing personality and keen sense of humor. She loved to share recipes and advice with anyone she felt would benefit.

Mrs. Bible was born June 21, 1927, and was the last surviving member in a family of nine children born to Charles Newton (C.N.) and Ruby Cecil Gass Holland.

She was preceded in death by her husband: William Carter "Billy" Bible in 2000, and by her sisters and brothers and their spouses: Madge Alma and Howard Franklin Weems, Thelma Rose and William McKay "Bill" Harold, Mary Ruth Holland, William Eugene "Gene" Holland and wives Ileene "Ennie" Goodson Holland and Louise Sauceman Holland, Harry Lee and Irene Rhea Holland, Bernie Doyle Holland, Charlotte Carol and Charles A. "C.A." Walker, and Nancy Sue Holland Hathcock.

Survivors include a niece and her husband: Joyce and Wendell Smith of Greeneville who were her longtime caregivers.

Other survivors include nieces and nephews and their spouses: Stanley Weems of Greene County, Kyle R. Weems and Mary Jo and Ralph Craighead of Chattanooga, Jane and William Jacob "Jake" Waller of Jasper, Ga., William M. "Billy" and Nancy Harold of Powell, Jenelle and Wayne Hite of Greene County, Harry Lee Holland of Slidel, La., Christopher John "Chris" and Leigh Ann Holland of Athens, Ga., Bernie Lynn and Chris Holland of Jonesborough, Andy and Sandy Walker of Fruitland Park, Fla., Sally and Tim Francisco of Sarasota, Fla. and Billy Hathcock of California; a sister-in-law: Mrs. Bernie (Louise Lankford) Holland of Johnson City; great-niece and caregiver: Karen White Hopson and husband, Lyndell, and her children, Leah Looney and, spouse Hunter of Orlando, Fla., and Lance White of Fall Branch; great-nephew and spouse: Jerry Wayne and Carol Malone and their children, Josh and Rachel, of Canton, Ga.; great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; friends: Ellen and Kenneth Graham, Mildred Dearstone, Brenda and Louis Kleeper, Neva McLain, Phyllis and Jimmy Tunnell, Roberta Gass, Nancy Casteel, Francis and Thomas Johnson, Ralph Harvey, Susie and Lanny Jones and Johnny and Dianne Carter, who were devoted friends and neighbors; and special caregiver: Michele DeLotto and Shanna DeLotto, and little friend, Mikaila "Curly" Chapman, who were like family to her.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service, downtown.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the downtown chapel with interment in Cross Anchor Cemetery. The Rev. Donna Waddell and the Rev. Nathan Reynolds will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Graham, Lonnie Key, Johnny "Tarp" Thompson, Jerry Wayne Malone, Lynn Holland, Stewart Weems, Billy Harold, and Andy Walker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Andy Roberts and his nurse, Nicole Norton, Dr. Mandeep Bakshi, the nurses and staff of 4-East at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, the nurses and staff Laughlin HealthCare Center, and her caregivers, Flora "Flo" Sheeks and Geraldine Weems.
