Virginia Sue Mayes

Died: March 28, 2013

MORRISTOWN -- Virginia "Sue" Mayes, age 83, of Morristown, passed away Thursday at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System.

She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

She played an integral part in the family business, Mayes Mortuary, along with her son and late husband.

Sue was a former president of the Pilot Club, former board member of The Adult Center, as well as owner and operator of The Knit Shop, formerly in downtown Morristown.

She loved playing Bridge and traveling with her close group of friends, as well as spending time with her great-grandkids doing arts and crafts, puzzles, and making jewelry.

She recently won Life Care Center's Regional Art Contest, where she hand painted and designed the winning Christmas card.

She was a member of the Bell Ringers Choir at Ridgeview Terrace, where she was named "Queen of the Nursing Home."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Belle Hasbrook, and husband of 49 years, Herbert W. Mayes.

She is survived by her son: Buddy (Donna) Mayes; daughters: Mary Jane Dacus of Rutledge and Judy (Phil) Franklin of Blountville; grandchildren: Rachel Hughes, Terri (Michael) Mayes, Tracy (Shawn) Summers, Doug and Richard Dacus, Tyler Mayes, and Jonathon and Andrew Franklin; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their thanks and appreciation to the staff of Ridgeview Terrace Life Care Center in Rutledge for their care and compassion.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Mayes Family Services, downtown chapel, with the Rev. Dwight Kenney and the Rev. Richard Long officiating.

Family and friends will go in procession to Jarnagin Cemetery for the graveside service. The Rev. Kenneth Connors will officiate.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, great-grandsons, and Aaron Goodin and Hayden Dacus.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
