Mary Charles Shipley

Died: April 4, 2013

Mary Charles Moncier Shipley, age 94, of Highway 107, Chuckey, passed away at Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Greeneville. A faithful Christian, she went to her heavenly home on Thursday morning.

She was affectionately known as "Granny" by her family, and many who knew and loved her. She was much admired for her strength, hard work, and warm smile.

Never one to complain, even in her years of failing health, she was very grateful to those who cared for and assisted her.

Mrs. Shipley was born Dec. 1, 1918, and was the last surviving member of her siblings.

She was married to Guy W. Shipley for 58 years, until his death on Aug. 1, 1995. She spent much of her lifetime farming with her husband, and she also retired from Greene Valley Developmental Center.

In addition, she found years of pleasure in meeting and visiting with customers while assisting her son at Shipley's Greenhouse.

During the majority of her life, she was able to find enjoyment in vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting, quilting and spending time with her family.

Granny found joy in long travels, or even an afternoon outing. She most especially loved family trips to the beach.

She was faithful in her many years of attendance at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Faye and Eugene Shepherd of Greeneville; a son and daughter-in-law: Hugh Allen and Joyce Ann Shipley of Chuckey; a daughter-in-law: Linda Joyce Shipley of Greeneville; three granddaughters and their husbands: Lisa (Shepherd) Crum and Russ Crum and Jonna (Shipley) Rhea and Rob Rhea, all of Greeneville, and Jada (Shipley) Ball and Matt Ball of Needville, Texas; three grandsons: Kevin Shipley of Chuckey, Paul Shipley and wife, Paula, of Russellville, and John Shipley II and wife, Staci, of Greeneville; eight great-grandchildren: Brooke Shipley of Chuckey, Alyssa Crum of Greeneville, Jordan and Alexys Shipley of Jonesborough, Parker and Conner Shipley, and Riley Rhea of Greeneville, and Maddox Ball of Needville; special nieces and nephews: Gay Nell Roberson, Gaye Duncan, Carolyn Thompson, Kay Moncier, Danny Moncier, and Robert Lloyd Moncier, and several other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Johnny R. Shipley on Aug. 28, 2012; an infant son: Dennis Grady Shipley on Jan. 1, 1945, and an infant grandson: Jason Shipley; her parents: Charley Moncier and Nora (Jennings) Moncier Tignor, and her stepfather: Dewey Tignor; a sister: Pearl Tignor Jennings; brothers: Tate Moncier, and Haskell "Hack" Moncier; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The family will receive friends at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

The service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the burial to follow at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. The Rev. Dennis Shumate and Chaplain Gregory Barlow will officiate.

Active pallbearers will be Kevin Shipley, Paul Shipley, John Shipley, Russ Crum, Rob Rhea, and Joe Armstrong.

Honorary pall bearers will be Kay Moncier, Danny Moncier, Robert Lloyd Moncier, Carl Duncan, Billy Fellers, Sidney Greene, Dave Foreman, Bobby Hensley, Bob Weaver, Walter and Ruth Armstrong, Gayle Armstrong, Kathy Seaton, Charlotte Peters, Mary Ann Gray, Gerrie Richard, Nancy Burns, Edith Waldrop, Linda Duggins, the members of the Senior Women's Bible Class of Liberty Church, and Dr. Thomas Beckner, and his nurse, Allison.

The family expresses deep gratitude and a special heartfelt thank you to the staff and employees of Morning Pointe of Greeneville, and Smoky Mountain Health and Hospice for their tender and loving care.
