Died: June 21, 2013

Ben Thompson, 76 passed away Friday morning after a two-year battle with cancer. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

Ben was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed working his land in Afton.

He was retired from the Department of Agriculture, working as County Executive Director of the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service before being appointed State Executive Director by President George H.W. Bush.

He served for many years on the Greene County Election Commission and the Greene County School Board.

He later worked as a director with the Burley Stabilization Corp.

Always a helpful neighbor, Ben has touched many lives and will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Rosie Thompson, two sons: Benny and Bandy Thompson; a special grandson: Kelly Thompson and fiancée, Jenny Bledsoe; three sisters and their spouses: Helen Chandley, Judy and Lawrence Philips Jr., and Linda and Ray Maupin; his sisters-in-law and their spouses: Joyce and Dennis Hopson, Dee Anna and Carl Robertson, Judy Perrino, and Gail and Bill Thomas; and a brother-in-law: Tom Humphrey.

He was preceded in death by his parents: N.X. and Mary Thompson, and a sister: Patricia Thompson.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service, Afton Chapel.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Afton Chapel with interment in Mount Zion Cemetery. Dan Duggar will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Gary Smith, Ronnie Seay, Jim Peters, Lawrence Phillips, Carl Robertson, and Donnie Brown.

Honorary pallbearers will be the farmers of Greene County, The Hardee's Breakfast Club, the directors of the BSC, and employees of the Farm Service Agency.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Zion Building Fund.
