Died: July 28, 2013

Elsie M. Higgins, 87, of Greeneville, passed away Sunday at Takoma Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Higgins was a registered nurse for 35 years.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mostly, she was a Christian and a loving wife of 43 years, a loving and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and feeding them. She also loved flowers.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years: Richard P. Higgins of Greeneville; four daughters: Cheryl Shrum and her husband, Tony, of Chattanooga, Lisa Gray of Cookeville, Melody Gibbons of Alto, Texas, and Amy Smith of Mesquite, Texas; two sons: Wesley McDonald and his wife, Linda, of Jasper, Ind., and Fred McDonald and his wife, Nancy, of Greeneville; 10 grandchildren: Sabra Johnson, Stacey McDonald, Ryan McDonald, Katie Shrum, Michael Morris, Juli Powell, Shane Richardson, Branden Richardson, Alisa Simons-Gambill and Michelle Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister: Ruth Schermerhorn of Deltona, Fla.; one brother-in-law: Charles Tollerton of Alabama; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Owen and Grace Barrett; a sister: Grayce Tollerton; and a brother-in-law: Ed Schermerhorn.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Pastor Jeremy Arnall will officiate.

Family and friends will be pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Community Service Center of Greeneville Seventh-day Adventist Church.
