Gary Wayne James, 70, of Greeneville, passed away Saturday at the Johnson City Medical Center after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer.

He was a master machinist. He loved building engines.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, watching car racing and hunting.

He was inducted into the Barberton Sports Hall of Fame, Barberton, Ohio, in 2007. He won the State Wrestling Championship from Barberton in 1961.

He built a modified stock race car that won three championships in Phoenix, Ariz., in the early 1980s.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years: Donna James; a daughter and son-in-law: Jacqueline and Don Taylor of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepdaughter: Karen Leib-McCray of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; two sons and daughters-in-law: Jesse and Heidi James of Ledyard, Conn., and Frank and Laura James of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; a sister: Gwendolyn Larson of Hopewell, Va.; his half-sisters: Rebecca Volkmor of Clinton, Ohio, Pamella and Richard Henley of Carrollton, Ohio, Nancy Robinson of Chester, W.Va., and JoAnn and Roy Gregorich of Barboursville, W.Va.; his half-brothers and sisters-in-law: Ronald and Linda James, and John James, all of Clinton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a son of the late Junior Wayne James and Vivian Louise Petitto and was preceded in death by his sisters: Sandra Sohar and Barbara Hall.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to the residence following the memorial service for a time of reflection and fellowship.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or to the American Diabetes Association.
