He was born June 8, 1933, in Washington County, and lived both in Tennessee and Illinois.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his loving, devoted wife of 57 years: Mary Selma (Sally) Nelson; godchild: Patricia Hall, her husband Randy, and son Terry; godchild: Dwight Tipton, his wife Terrie, and children, Isaac, Jacob, and Tabitha; four brothers: Carl and wife Edna of Genoa, David and Phyllis of Weber City, Va., Roy of Genoa, and Billy Joe of Limestone; five sisters: Betty Lou Tipton and husband, Garland, of Telford, Kate Davis and husband, Guy, of Afton, Joy Adams and husband, Tom, of Telford, Georgie Nelson of Chuckey, and Mary Ruth McCoy of Greeneville; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, who were all very special to him.

Robert Lee was a son of the late Henry C. Nelson and Ora Mae Willis Nelson and was preceded in death by his brother: John C. "J.C." of Genoa; and his sister: Bessie Pleasant of Limestone.

He will be lovingly remembered for his wit and humor, stories, and his love of NASCAR, baseball, and children. He will be sadly missed and forever loved.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville. The Rev. Mark Hatley will officiate.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the service.
