Alice Frances 'Tootsie' Gass

Died: Jan. 23, 2014

Alice Frances "Tootsie" Gass, 87, of the Bibles Chapel Community, formerly of the West Pines Community, passed away Thursday at her home.

She joined the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1943. She had served as treasurer, taught Sunday School Class, Bible School and belonged to the FCE. She attended church as long as her health permitted. She loved to go to church with her family, and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Virginia Gass; her granddaughters and their husbands: Stephanie and Brett Parman, Whitney Gass and Heather and Anthony Bailey; her great-grandchildren: Hunter Parman, Kaitlyn Parman, Taylor Bailey, Aiden Bailey, and Megan Bailey; two sisters and their husbands: Mildred and Bert Thornburg and Martha and Oscar Harkleroad, all of Kingsport; many special cousins; an aunt: Ruby Smith; friends and neighbors; and two special caregivers: Julie James and Mary Ricker. .

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years: Berthold "Bert" Gass, and a son: David Larry Gass. She was a daughter of the late Willie and Maggie Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service, downtown, with the funeral service following at 7 p.m. The Rev. Rex Brown and the Rev. Richard Long will officiate.

Family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. Monday to go in procession to Pleasant Hill CP Church Cemetery for a 2 p.m. committal service.

Pallbearers will be Bill Turnmire, Steve Thornburg, Paul Bolton, George Saylor, Stan Southerland and Ray Wilson.
