Mildred Self Masengill, 85, of Morristown, formerly of Greene County, died Wednesday at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System.

Mrs. Masengill had lived at Regency Retirement Center in Morristown for the past 12 years.

She was born July 24, 1922, and was a daughter of the late James D. and Pearl Grigsby Self. She was the widow of James B. Masengill Jr.

Mrs. Masengill graduated from Tusculum College in 1944, and received a master's degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City in 1963.

She taught science and Spanish, at Chuckey and Chuckey-Doak high schools, from 1951 to 1985. In 1960 she was named "Teacher of the Year" in the Greene County School System.

Mrs. Masengill was a member of Economy United Methodist Church in Morristown and formerly a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Greeneville.

Survivors include her sister: Dorothy Fernsler of Morristown, and six nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister: Donald Self, Virgil Self, Rex Self, Joe Self, and Madge Self.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 11 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dwight Kenney will officiate.

Interment will be in Chuckey Community Cemetery at Chuckey United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be her relatives and friends.
