Minnis C. Payne

Died: June 22, 2008

Minnis C. Payne, 88, formerly of Gap Mountain Road, died early Sunday morning at Life Care Center of Greeneville.

Mr. Payne was a farmer.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Payne was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was the widower of Ella Vena Booker Payne, who died June 6, 1999.

Mr. Payne is survived by one son: James C. Payne; three sisters: Margaret Lamb, Helen Murdock, and Louise Watson, all of Greeneville; five granddaughters; five grandsons; and his adopted granddaughters: Stephanie Kumpe, and Lori Carter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: George Payne and Basil Payne.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 Tuesday morning in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Billy Moore will officiate.

Interment will follow in Carter's Chapel Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.

Pallbearers will be John Rierson, Ken Laughlin, Lanny Jones, Joseph Fortenberry, Freddie Owens, and Teddy West.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Penley, Roger Kilday, and Lash Walker.
