GHS senior Drew Thomas took home two conference championships in the IMAC Track and Field Meet held at Jefferson County on Thursday leading the boys team to a fourth place finish. The girls held on for third overall.

Thomas, the 2007 IMAC discus champion, had an off day in the discus with a throw of 130'6", but it was enough to win the event by nine feet. He didn't have an off day in the shot, taking first place with a personal best of 48'5". This was the fifth meet this year that Thomas has took home double firsts in the shot and discus.

Thomas was not alone in taking home an IMAC championship for the boys. Junior Matt Murphy won the 1600 with a possible school record time of 4:33. Murphy followed that performance with a fourth place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:09.

On the girls side, Akema Beard and Ashley Ellenberg took home conference titles. Beard, a senior, took home first place in the discus with a hurl of 101'0". The throw broke her previous personal best by almost sixteen feet. Beard also finished third in the shot with a throw of 28'7". Ellenburg won the 3200 with a time of 12:39 and placed second in the mile with a time of 5:51.

The team will be competing in the Times-News Relays tonight and the TSSAA Sectional Championships on May 9.
