A Washington County Sheriff's Department detention officer was charged on Thursday with eight felonies in connection with the smuggling of tobacco products into the Washington County Detention Center.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal announced that Timothy R. Crain, 39 of 2006 Heritage Place, Johnson City, was arrested Thursday after investigators questioned him about allegations of introducing contraband into the detention center in Jonesborough.

"During the interview, Crain told investigators that he had smuggled tobacco products to several prisoners in return for money," a press release said.

Crain also told investigators that he had made arrangements with prisoners for payment by going into the prisoner's property and obtaining debit cards and making withdrawals from personal bank accounts using a P.I.N. number provided by the inmate, according to the release.

In addition to being terminated, Crain is being charged with eight counts of official misconduct and was being held in the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $16,000 bond.

An arraignment is scheduled for Monday, May 12, at 9 a.m. in Washington County General Sessions Court in Jonesborough.
