A report filed by Deputy Sheriff Michael Jones about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday said J.D. Ooten, 88, of North Mohawk Road, had been working on the tractor in a field off North Mohawk Road when the accident took place. Ooten had been flown from the scene to the Johnson City Medical Center by a Wings Air Rescue helicopter. The Sheriff's Department report said Ooten was discovered by a passerby some time after the accident took place. Ooten, according to the report, had been working on a John Deere tractor and apparently attempted to start the engine while standing on the ground beside it. "The tractor was in gear and ran over the victim," Deputy Jones said in his report. After striking Ooten, according to the report, the tractor continued down an embankment before stopping. The report noted that the passerby who found Ooten had left the area before Deputy Jones reached the scene at 3605 North Mohawk Road about 4:30 p.m. Copyright © 2008, The Greeneville Sun |
