Boy Scout Troop 94, sponsored by Asbury United Methodist Church, recently celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 31 at Kinser Park.

Troop 94 was chartered in April 1948 and has been in continuous operation since then.

Asbury United Methodist Church has been the sponsor for the Troop for the entire 60 years.

During this time approximately 1,000 boys have benefited from the troop's program and 53 of them earned the highest rank that Scouting has to offer, the rank of "Eagle Scout."

Several of Troop 94's Scouts have served their country in the armed forces and in recent years three Troop 94 Scouts have earned West Point appointments.

Approximately 150 people, including the troop's current Scouts, alumni Scouts, current and former leaders, and their family's attended a day-long celebration held at Kinser Park.

The event included a pig roast, awards ceremony, multi-media presentation titled "Troop 94 - Then and Now" (a collection of pictures of the Troop's activities dating as far back as the late 50's). It concluded with the traditional campfire.

State Rep. Eddie Yokley D-11th, of Greene County, presented the troop with a Tennessee House of Representatives Proclamation commemorating this special event.

Alumni Scouts attending included prominent Greenevillians and others from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, California, and Florida.

Alumni had the opportunity to renew old friendships and share memories with fellow Scouts, some they had not seen in over forty years. Fifteen men have served as Scoutmaster for the Troop during its sixty years. Out of the eleven scoutmasters still living, eight were present at the reunion.

Troop 94 has one of strongest and most active programs of region (Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Eight of its scouts are preparing to go to the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

The troop meets on Monday nights at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Asbury UMC.
