The Greene County Fair got off to a happy start with the Little Britches contest featuring children from three to eight years old showing their calves five months old and younger.

As a crowd comprised mainly of proud family members watched, the nervous children walked their calves in circles as the judges eyed them closely.

One little boy who was having a difficult time getting his calf to move, yelled out to a family member, "I won't let you down, brother!"

This year's contest winners were Hayden Hartman, 4, in the class for three- to five-year-olds, and Saylor Utsman, 8, in the class for six- to eight-year-olds.

Hartman has been competing in the contest since he was 23 months old. His brother Hunter, 6, also shows cattle.

"They just love it. They look forward to it every year," said their mother.

Utsman started competing when she was three-years-old. Her grandfather and uncle own a diary farm in Jonesborough and her mother said the family has been working with cows for many years.

The known 10 competitorsin the three-to-five division were: Macey Hipsher, 4; Campbell Gaby, 3; Julia Utsman, 2; Kip Collins, 5, Mary Beth Collette, 4; Callie Collette, 1; Hayden Hartman, 4; Patrick Baker, 4; Jacob Hutsell, 3, and Aidan Daniels, 3.

The known 10 competitors in the six-to-eight division were: Isaac Graham, 6; Austin Blevins, 7; Abbi Morelock, 8; Walton Collins, 7; Jacob Good, 7; Saylor Utsman, 8; Hunter Hartman, 6; Hunter Miller, 7; Mason Daniels, 7; and Bradley Holt, 8.

The judge was Lynn Lee from Symrna. Lee has judged competitions out of state and in other countries. He said he enjoys the challenge of judging.
