A five-car, chain-reaction collision that took place on the East Andrew Johnson Highway near Haynes Boulevard about 12:25 p.m. Friday injured two people, including Greeneville Sun Assistant Managing Editor Rich Jones.

GPD Capt. Craig Fillers, who investigated the collision, said it took place after eastbound traffic on the East Andrew Johnson Highway slowed due to an earlier two-vehicle collision near the intersection of the East Andrew Johnson Highway and Erwin Highway.

As traffic slowed near Haynes Boulevard because of the earlier accident, Capt. Fillers said, a Dodge Charger driven by Richard Foshie, 34, of Jonesborough, struck the rear of a 2000 Mazda compact sedan driven by Rich Jones, 57, of Lick Hollow Road.

The rear-end collision sent the Mazda sedan driven by Jones into the rear of a 1988 Ford Bronco sport-utility vehicle driven by Melinda Henry, 43, of Anderson Loop, according to Capt. Fillers.

The Bronco then struck the rear of a 1995 Geo Prism driven by David Flores Luna, 26, of the Erwin Highway.

The Geo Prism then struck the rear of a 2008 Ford Mustang driven by Sherri A. Ward, 44, of the Old Knoxville Highway, Capt. Fillers said.

Jones was transported by a Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Laughlin Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the collision, according to Capt. Fillers.

A hospital spokesman said about 4 p.m. Friday that Jones had been treated and released.

The only other person injured in the chain-reaction collision was Georgia Cutshaw, a passenger in the Henry vehicle, according to Capt. Fillers. He noted that Cutshaw was treated at the scene by EMS personnel but declined transportation to a hospital.

Earlier Accident

Capt. Fillers said the earlier accident near the Hardee's restaurant on the East Andrew Johnson Highway involved a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Donna M. Davis, 42, of Woodmont Drive, Greeneville.

He noted that the 1994 Eagle Talon driven by Davis struck another car and veered off the road into a grassy area near the Hardee's restaurant.

"She tried to miss her and wound up hitting her in the car," Fillers said. He said he did not have the name of the other driver involved in the accident.

Davis was charged with DUI by GPD Officer Eddie Short.
