With the game
tied in the bottom of the seventh, two out and down in the count 0-2, Chase Bailey drove in the
winning run with a base hit to right to lift South Greene to an 8-7 victory over visiting University
High on Tuesday.
The Rebels thought they had their second victory of the
season in hand early, but the Junior Bucs took advantage of some mental mistakes by South Greene's
infield in the top of the seventh to score a tying run with two
out.
South Greene regrouped and got out of a dangerous situation with two
UH runners in scoring position.
In the bottom half of the inning, just
when it looked like the game was headed to extra innings, Bailey came up with his big hit into the
gap, allowing Brice Cutshaw to race around from second and slide in under the tag to win the game
for the Rebels.
The Rebels, without six players, including four starters,
who have been dismissed for a violation of team rules, gave up two runs in the top of the first but
took control thanks to some good work at the plate in their first
at-bats.
UH's Van Mominee staked the Bucs to a 2-0 lead with a two-out,
two-run single to left in the first.
Bucs pitcher Tyler Evanshen, making
his first start of the year, had trouble locating the strike zone early, walking three of the first
four batters he faced. That led to a five-run first inning for the Rebels, marked by a two-run
single to right by Alex Arwood.
University High (0-10) pulled a run back
in the fourth, but the Rebs had a big bottom half to make it a 7-3 game. Jalyn Shuffler got it
started for South Greene with a two-out double, and Scott Susong had an RBI single for one of his
two hits in the game.
South Greene pitcher Cory Malone struck out three
in the sixth inning, but unfortunately for the Rebels, University High wrapped three runs around an
error to pull to within one at 7-6 before Malone got the Rebels out of
it.
The Bucs rallied again in the seventh when Ethan Vicars reached on a
double and ultimately scored when South Greene's infield was caught napping, tying the score before
Bailey and Cutshaw won for the Rebs.
Malone went the distance for the
pitching win, striking out 11 and giving up nine hits.
The Rebels (2-5)
had six hits in the game, led by two each from Bailey and Susong. Shuffler and Susong each had a
double.
South Greene is scheduled to host Cosby on Thursday at 4:30
