A Greene County man was charged after a Tuesday night traffic stop on Kiser Boulevard by a Tennessee State Trooper with possessing cocaine for resale and possessing marijuana.
Wilhelm Nelson D. Lyle, 24, of 1835 Old Stage Road, was charged after the 1996 Pontiac Sunfire that he was driving was stopped for driving 50 mph in a 30-mph zone on Kiser Boulevard.
Arrest warrants filed by Trooper James Fillers said Lyle refused a request from Trooper Fillers to search the car after the traffic stop.
As a result, according to the warrant, Deputy Sheriff Nakia Tweed and his drug-detection dog, Castro, were summoned to the scene. After the police dog reacted to the car, officers said they had probable cause to perform a search of its interior, according to the arrest warrant.
During that search, the warrant said, officers found in the car's glove compartment about two ounces of a white powder that field-tested positive for the presence of cocaine.
Under the passenger seat, officers allegedly found 11 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana.
Bond for Lyle was set at $11,000. He was scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on March 26.
Previous Incident
Police said Lyle is the man who was wounded in a Jan. 9 shooting incident off Tusculum Boulevard in Greeneville that left Walter Lee Whinery, 22, of East Allens Bridge Road, dead.
No charges have been placed by Greeneville police in connection with the fatal shooting.
Lyle initially had been treated on Jan. 9 at Laughlin Memorial Hospital before being transferred to the JCMC.
Greeneville police earlier this year said officers had been called to Laughlin Memorial Hospital late on Jan. 9 after Lyle came there suffering from facial injuries.
Lyle told police that another wounded man could be found in an alley behind the Rogers Automotive Service building at 529 Tusculum Boulevard.
Upon arrival there, according to a police press release, officers found Walter Lee Whinery lying on the pavement.
Whinery, who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound, or wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
GPD Capt. Terry Webb said in January that police recovered two firearms at the shooting scene.
