A Greene County grand jury that met on Thursday indicted a Dandridge man on multiple charges stemming from a January vehicle theft and police pursuit.
James Larry Hurst, 41, of 2512 Muddy Hollow Road, Dandridge, was indicted on charges of theft over $10,000 in connection with the Jan. 3 theft of a Ford F-250 pickup truck from the Lowe's parking lot on the East Andrew Johnson Highway.
He also was indicted on charges of evading arrest by GPD Officer Jeff Sowers and vandalizing a pursuing patrol car by throwing a tape recorder at it in connection with the incident.
Greeneville police reports indicated that officers had responded shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, to a report that a Ford F-250 pickup truck had been stolen from the Lowe's parking lot on East Andrew Johnson Highway.
About an hour later, Officer Sowers was heard telling the GPD dispatcher that he had observed what he thought to be the stolen truck on the East Andrew Johnson Highway near Fairgrounds Road.
Arrest warrants filed later alleged that the driver of the pickup truck, who was later identified as Hurst, ignored the blue lights and siren of Officer Sowers' patrol car and "darted in and out of traffic" on the East Andrew Johnson Highway while traveling about 20 mph above the speed limit.
Officer Sowers was heard telling his dispatcher by radio that the truck had turned onto CCU Boulevard and subsequently had fled toward the Consumer Credit Union office, which is located at the end of a dead-end road.
After reaching the credit union, Officer Sowers reported by radio, the truck went "off the road" and down a steep embankment before striking a concrete wall behind the Tractor Supply Company building.
Hurst then fled on foot, but was apprehended in front of the Tractor Supply Company store by police a short time later.
An arrest warrant that charged Hurst with theft over $10,000 said the truck had contained a firearm, ammunition and watches.
During the pursuit, according to a vandalism warrant, Hurst allegedly threw a tape recorder from the fleeing truck. The tape recorder struck, and damaged, the hood of Officer Sowers' patrol car during the pursuit.
He will be scheduled for trial in Greene County Criminal Court at a later date on the charges for which he was indicted on Thursday, May 1.
Facing Federal Charge
In addition, Hurst was indicted on a charge of simple possession of marijuana.
Hurst had been indicted by a federal grand jury here earlier this year on a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun in connection with the same incident.
He is scheduled for trial on June 4 in U.S. District Court on the federal firearms charge, according to court records. Court records indicate the trial is expected to last two days.
