ELIZABETHTON -- Drama was the order of the day in the opening round of the District 1-AA Baseball Tournament here Saturday at Joe O'Brien Field.

West Greene had the most unlikely win. The Buffaloes got an epic pitching performance from Brandon Campbell and a heroic at-bat from Taylor McAmis to upset No. 2 seed and tournament host Elizabethton 2-1 in 10 innings.

Chuckey-Doak got the most thrilling victory. The Black Knights were all but upset and bounced out of the tournament when with the last swing of the long day Justin Tarlton dropped a two-run single into shallow center to bring Chuckey-Doak back from the brink with a 7-6 win over Johnson County.

Top-seeded Unicoi County closed out South Greene's season with a 6-1 decision, and Happy Valley ground out a 9-5 win over Sullivan North.

The tournament continues today in Elizabethton with Unicoi County taking on Happy Valley at 5 p.m. followed by West Greene vs. Chuckey-Doak at 7:30.

Buffs Win Marathon

West Greene has been playing its best baseball of the year lately, and it showed on Saturday. The Buffs closed out the regular season with three straight victories, and got a number of quality performances Saturday to make it four in-a-row at the expense of the regular season co-champions.

"It means a lot to me because we started out early in the year with a five or six game stretch where we really weren't playing good baseball," said coach Mark Bowles, whose Buffs won 2-1. "About mid season we really started playing the way we are capable. To see this bunch come out here, not lay down and step up to the challenge ... I don't think there were very many people that expected us to win this ball game ... but when you compete the way you should, anybody can be beaten."

Campbell pitched all 10 innings of the marathon, limiting Elizabethton (15-11) to one run on six hits while walking none and striking out four. Fittingly enough, it was Campbell who rung up the final out of the game when the Cyclones' leadoff man hit a weak dribbler back to the mound.

Buff shortstop Adrian Sauceman made a huge play in the 10th, too, making a ranging grab followed by an acrobatic throw over to first to keep a runner off base.

West Greene's defense allowed only two base runners over the final four innings, and neither one of them advanced past first base. Third baseman Adam Shepherd came up big in the sixth inning, robbing the Cyclones of two runs with an inning-ending stop and throw to first with runners in scoring position.

At the plate, West Greene (10-12) had five hits, and McAmis had the two most important ones. He drove in both Buff runs with a pair of two-out RBI doubles, one in the fifth to get the Buffs on the board and one when he was down in the count 1-2 in the 10th to ultimately win the game.

Chance Lamb also had a double for the Buffs.

Knights Win Thriller

Chuckey-Doak was three outs from seeing its season come crashing to a halt, but the Knights didn't give up. They rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6.

"That was one of the best wins I've had in 20 years," said Black Knight coach Tim Lady. "To come back like we did ... I'm proud of the way they fought back."

The Knights (16-12) got off to a good enough start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Chad Shelton and Tarlton in the first inning. Johnson County (12-14) cut the lead in half when the Longhorns scored a run on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Things started to come undone for the Knights in the fifth. Two errors opened the door for the Longhorns to score four runs and move ahead.

Chuckey-Doak got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning but still trailed 5-4. Shelton had the big hit with an RBI double off the wall on a shot that would have been a home run and then some at any high school park.

Johnson County padded its lead with a run in the top of the seventh thanks to another Chuckey-Doak error.

Down by two and facing elimination, Chuckey-Doak responded in a big way in the Knights' last at-bats. The Knights scored three runs to win it, and all three runs came with two out.

Kevin Alexander led off the inning with his first hit of the night. Longhorn pitcher Nevin Snyder had Johnson County on the verge of winning with back-to-back strikeouts, but that's when Chuckey-Doak rallied.

Drew Lady got Alexander in on an RBI double, and Johnson County gave Shelton a free pass to first in an effort to pitch to Trevor Richerson and Tarlton, who had both struck out in their previous two plate appearances.

That was a mistake.

Richerson dropped a single into left to load the bases, and then Tarlton stepped up with a hit into center to win the game.

Shelton got the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out five in two and two thirds innings.

Rebels Eliminated

Top-seeded Unicoi County plated runs in each of the first four innings to eliminate South Greene 6-1.

The Blue Devils (22-7) only got seven hits, but took advantage of two South Greene errors in the first and two more in the second to jump out to their big lead.

The Rebels were limited to two hits. Kenan Wilhoit reached on a two-out double in the third, and then Cory Malone scored South Greene's run with a towering solo homer in the top of the seventh.

South Greene closes out the season with a 4-21 record. Coach Larry Hogan said it's been a trying year for the Rebels both on and off the field, but the thing the team has to focus on is the experience gained by its young players.

"We've got a lot of talent coming back for next year," Hogan said. "Certainly we are sad to see our seniors go. It's been about restoring some integrity to themselves and to the game of baseball itself. We just hope to move on. I hope it settles down so we can."
