GHS Netters Still Alive In District 2-AAA Action

MORRISTOWN -- Greeneville High School still has several netters alive hoping for hardware as the District 2-AAA Tennis Tournament concludes this afternoon at Frank Lorino Park.

The semifinals in all divisions will begin this afternoon at 4 p.m. followed by finals.

In boys' singles, Greeneville's Reston Hartsell and Devansh Patel are still alive. Hartsell, the No. 2 seed, advanced by beating Cesar Penalba of Morristown East 6-1, 6-4 to get to today's semis, while No. 4 seed Devansh Patel moved on by beating Jefferson's John Eric Newman 6-0, 6-2.

Patel will take on No. 1 seed Curt Duncan of Morristown West in one semifinal match today, while Hartsell will battle No. 3 seed Travis Pace of Cocke County in the other bracket.

In boys' doubles, Greeneville's No. 3 seeded duo of Matthew Smith and Weston Epley beat Morristown East's Ethan Britton and Brandon Sexton 6-1, 6-2. They will be in the semis today against Jefferson's No. 2 seeded team of Garrett Ellis and Tyler Catlett.

Greeneville's second doubles team of John Wesley Patterson and Chris DeWitt won their first round match against Adam Gray and Zach Duck of Jefferson 6-2, 6-4, but were defeated in the second round by top seeded Eric Linkous and Matt Blair 6-0, 6-3. Linkous and Blair will play Morristown West's Patrick Ashford and Joe Bilotti in the other bracket of the doubles semis this afternoon.

In girls' singles, Greeneville's No. 4 seed Jerrica Goodson moved to the semis, thanks to an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over Jefferson's Molly Strange. She will be paired against top seed Chesnea Gray of Morristown West in the semis this afternoon.

Greeneville's other singles entrant, Camille Adams, was defeated by Jefferson's Kesleah Hall 6-0, 6-1 in a first round match.

In girls' doubles, Greeneville's Devan McIntyre and Rachel Collins, seeded No. 3, are still alive after a marathon win over Jefferson's Sara Headrick and Danielle Ward. The scores from the long match were 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-4. They will play No. 2 seed Rachel Bowlin and Grace Williams of West today.

Greeneville's doubles team of Abby Woods and Chelsea Wilhoit won the first round match against Caitlin Bradley and Jamie Michael of Cherokee 6-1, 6-1, but lost to top seeded Kayley Ray and Maggie Clement of Jefferson 6-0, 6-2. Ray and Clement will meet West's Beth Davis and Kristi Bowlin in the semifinals today.

Greeneville's boys lead in team points after the first two rounds of the tournament with seven points while Morristown West has five. Morristown West leads in girls with eight points, Jefferson has six and Greeneville has five.
