ELIZABETHTON -- After watching West Greene pull off consecutive wins over higher seeded teams in the District 1-AA Baseball Tournament, Unicoi County was not about to take the Buffaloes lightly.

The Blue Devils erupted for six runs in the first inning and bumped the upstart Buffs into the loser's bracket of the tournament with an 11-0 victory here Tuesday at Joe O'Brien Field.

Earlier, the Chuckey-Doak boys saw their season come to a close at the hands of Happy Valley, as the Knights were unable to overcome six errors and lost an 8-3 decision to the Warriors.

That sets up a meeting at 6 p.m. today between West Greene and Happy Valley in an elimination contest, with the winner meeting Unicoi on Thursday for the district championship. Tonight's winner also earns a berth in next week's Region 1-AA Tournament.

Williams Hurls Two-Hitter

Unicoi County ace pitcher Ethan Williams fired a two-hit shutout, and the Blue Devils bunched all their runs into two innings, six in the first and five in the third, closing out the game after five innings.

Williams struck out nine batters. Both hits allowed came in the second. Dalton Lamb cracked a lead-off single to left but was erased on a double play. Zach McCamey then followed with a single to right, but the third out was registered on a fly to right.

The Buffs got only one more runner aboard the rest of the way. Dalton Lamb reached again in the fourth on an infield error.

Unicoi got their six first inning runs on only three hits as Buff starter Jordan Ward had trouble finding the strike zone and walked three sraight batters, two of them forcing in runs with the bases loaded. Jake Ford then laced a two-run single and Logan Rice had an RBI double.

Skylar Barnett polished off the five-run third inning by cracking a three-run homer over the left-center field fence.

Rice had three hits to pace the Blue Devils while Barnett and Ford had two hits each. The Blue Devils scored their 11 runs on only seven hits.

Unearned Runs Kills C-D

Six Chuckey-Doak errors proved too much for the Knights to overcome as Happy Valley took advantage, scoring eight unearned runs to beat C-D 8-3.

A five-run fourth inning was the difference as the Warriors were able to overcome a 2-1 Chuckey-Doak lead to jump ahead for keeps

Two straight infield errors and a base hit by Jake Miller accounted for a lone Happy Valley run in the first, then the Knights struck for two in the second. Brandon Randolph legged out an infield hit with one out, then Tyler Feezell lined a single to left that got past the fielder and rolled all the way to the fence, allowing Randolph to score and Feezell to advance to third base. Feezell later scored when John Davis' grounder was mishandled.

Things fell apart for the Knights in the fourth. Miller and Craig Sheets started the inning with back-to-back hits, but after a strikeout by Knight starter Chad Shelton, C-D had a chance to get out of the mess. But two straight infield errors allowed one run to score, then Jake Howell rifled a two-run single to right.

Before the fire could be extinguished, Happy Valley scored two more times on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice squeeze bunt.

Happy Valley got two more unearned runs in the sixth. Two errors allowed the first two runners of the inning to reach, then with one out, Jake Hodge singled in a run and Sheets got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Chuckey-Doak, who out-hit the Warriors 8-6, got the bases loaded in the sixth but couldn't score. The final run for the Knights came in the seventh when Shelton boomed a long home run over the right field wall of Joe O'Brien Field.

Jake Howell went the distance on the mound and got the pitching win. He and Miller had two hits for Happy Valley. Devin Williams and Randolph had two hits each for the Knights.
