JELLICO -- An old foe awaits the North Greene Lady Huskies Wednesday night as they battle for the Region 1-A softball championship.

North Greene (22-10) will head back up to Carter County Wednesday for a 5 p.m. meeting with the Unaka Lady Rangers. It will be the sixth meeting of the season between the two district rivals, with the Rangers currently owning a 3-2 lead in this year's series.

Both teams earned a spot in the regional finals with easy victories Monday in semifinal play. North Greene booted out the homestanding District 2-A champ Jellico Lady Blue Devils 13-0, while Unaka, playing on their home field, romped over Cosby 14-0.

Now the stage is set for the championship game Wednesday. Whatever happens in that one, both the Huskies and Rangers are still alive for Friday's Sectional matchup. The winner gets to play at home Friday, while the loser must go on the road, either to Midway or Coalfield, the two teams who meet for the Region 2-A championship Wednesday.

"It's not like we don't know anything about Unaka," Huskies Coach Beverly Fletcher said after her team handily disposed of Jellico on Monday. "We've lost to them three times, but we've beaten them twice. So our girls know if they play hard and play well, they have a chance to win. We're playing pretty well right now ... hitting the ball well. Unaka has two pitchers so we don't know who we'll face, but we've seen both of them already."

The Rangers and Huskies had to play twice in the rain last Thursday night at Unaka for the District 1-A title. North Greene won the first game 12-6, but Unaka came back to take a decisive 1-0 win in the title-clinching contest. Earlier in the tourney, Unaka had picked up a 10-5 win over the Huskies. In the regular season meetings, North Greene won at home 6-3, while Unaka won at their place, 4-0.

North Greene beat Jellico by cranking out 14 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance from Samantha Weems, who also accounted for five RBIs on the night. They launched two mammoth home runs, both three-run shots, one by Jessie Adams and one by Misti Payne.

Huskies' pitcher Tosha Hall was in control on the mound, limiting the Blue Devils to only two hits while striking out seven.

After a scoreless first inning, North Greene got three unearned runs in the second inning. Adams and Amy Vallie both reached on errors, and both later scored on Weems' two-run single up the middle. Lindsey Darnell later knocked in Weems with a hit.

The Huskies made it 6-0 in the second with three more runs. Payne had an RBI single, driving in Brittany McGhee who had doubled with one out. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and Weems cranked a two-out double to center to plate two more runs.

North Greene made it 10-0 in the fourth with four runs, highlighted by Adams' 3-run dinger over the center field fence. Weems got her fifth RBI of the game with a base hit as well. Then in the fifth, the Huskies tacked on three more with Payne's long blast to center clearing the fence.

The only hits for Jellico were a two-out single by Sheka Richardson in the third and an infield single by Victoria Huddleston to lead off the fifth. Jellico's only chance to score came on Richardson's hit in the third. Jessica Prather had walked with one out and went to second on an infield grounder. Prather rounded third and headed for home on Prather's hit, but she was caught in a rundown between third and home and was tagged out.

Weems had four hits, McGhee three hits and Darnell and Payne two hits each for the Huskies.
