MORRISON, Colo. -- Allen Johnson placed second in this weekend's NHRA Mile-High Nationals.
Johnson qualified third for the event and cut his way through the first three rounds with victories over Warren Johnson, Larry Morgan and Ron Krisher.
He had to face Greg Anderson in the final round. Anderson left first and never looked back, stopping the clock at 7.024 to Johnson's 7.028 for a margin of victory of about six feet.
"I think we're on the turnaround mode," said an upbeat Johnson, who was the defending race champion. "We would have really liked to win this one, but we'll take a runner-up here at our sponsor Mopar's race and smile about it. I hope all the folks at Mopar are happy. We've been gaining momentum, and I think we proved it today. Last year we won here and went runner-up in Seattle. This year we're going to reverse it."
Top Fuel and Funny Car had historic wins. This race marked the first time in NHRA history the two nitro classes didn't race a quarter mile. As a safety measure, NHRA has shortened the finish line to 1,000 feet.
Tony Schumacher beat Antron Brown in the Top Fuel final, and Tim Wilkerson bested Jack Beckman in Funny Car.
