GreeneValleyDevelopmental
Center held its seventh annual "Race Day" on July 29.
More than 120
motorcycles, go-carts, 4-wheelers, antique and classic cars and trucks, drag cars, race cars,
pulling lawn-mowers, soap-box derby cars, and tractors were involved in the event, according to Mary
Ann Lewis, a GVDC employee and organizer of the event.
More than 400
vehicle owners and their family members attended the event. In addition to local enthusiasts,
visitors came from all over East Tennessee and parts of Virginia.
What
began in 2002 as a tribute to an individual who lived at Greene Valley with only six vehicles has
become an annual event at the facility.
Race Day is sponsored by GVDC's
Race Club and Pinewood Cottage, a home on the campus.
The evening began
with a cookout for the drivers, their family members, and for members of the Race Club. Area
businesses and restaurants provided much of the food and other amenities necessary for a cookout. A
local musician provided entertainment throughout the evening.
The
highlight of the event was the parade around Greene Valley's campus, with grand marshals being
several people who live at the facility.
"Blue Thunder," the campus
train, provided transportation.
Several of the people who live at GVDC
where dressed as pit crew members and race drivers.
One of the homes had
a finish line complete with a checkered flag to wave the drivers on to a win. Banners, posters and
racing paraphernalia hung from the trees as the parade passed.
Afterward,
drivers voted on the best welcoming and decorated area. Briarwood Cottage was chosen the best
display of Race Day spirit.
A meet-and-greet session was held after the
parade, and the drivers gave souvenirs as they talked about all the different shapes, sizes and
colors of the vehicles.
The Camp Creek Pulling Team donated previously
won plaques to the Race Club members as souvenirs.
All registered
drivers received door prizes donated by companies and businesses in the region, including the grand
prize of an overnight stay in Pigeon Forge with free admission to several popular attractions.
