Fire Department has commended First Captain Michael McKinney "for his act of bravery and self
sacrifice" in preventing another firefighter from being struck by a pickup near a traffic accident
scene on Nov. 30."
The recognition came in a letter of commendation
presented to McKinney at the department's annual Christmas dinner on Dec. 12.
McKinney was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic near an
accident scene on Newport Highway.
"He was helping direct traffic on the
Newport Highway when he was struck bya pickup truck that was pulling from a stopped position on
Warrensburg Road and failed to see him," a press release said.
"Mike was
struck after he pushed fellow firefighter Jason Seaton to safety as the truck approached. ason
Seaton had been standing with his back to the approaching truck when Mike pushed him to safety
before being struck in both legs by the truck," the release
said.
McKinney, according to the release, is being treated for multiple
fractures to his right ankle and his doctor indicated this past week that he will have a long
recovery and he will be meeting with a surgeon in the upcoming weeks.
"We are very proud of the heroism and selflessness that Mike showed in
coming to the aid of a fellow firefighter," DeBusk VFD Chief Regie Jones said. "Mike is the perfect
example of what being a firefighter is all about."
