The city of Kingsport has approved a permit for a "tea party" tax protest on Wednesday, April 15, the last day to file federal income taxes.
Britt Buehrig, the organizer, said the "Northeast Tennessee Tea Party" rally is scheduled to take place on tax day, April 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Park, 1650 Ft. Henry Drive, Kingsport, across from Dobyns-Bennett High School.
The keynote speaker will be former U.S. Rep. David Davis, a Republican from Johnson City.
James Queen, president and originator of the local tea party, said, "There will be hundreds of tax protest 'tea party' rallies all across America on April 15th, and I wanted to be part of history and make a difference. Now citizens of Tennessee and Virginia have banded together to fight big government spending."
Rally spokesman Buehrig added, "This is a non-partisan, peaceful protest giving local citizens the opportunity to voice their anger over tax rates and deficit spending. This is not an 'Obama bash.' "
"Bring your sign, be creative, and help us fight out-of- control federal spending," Buehrig said.
