The Chuckey-Doak "Black Hole" was filled with emotion on Friday night. The fans were treated to a highly spirited football game.
The visiting South Greene Rebels defeated the the heavy-hearted Black Knights 33-18 in the final regular season game for the two teams. Chuckey-Doak celebrated Senior Night.
The Rebels kept their slim playoff hopes alive with the victory. They'll find out, along with the rest of the state, how the playoffs will play out during an announcement from TSSAA this morning.
The Chuckey-Doak family is still mourning the loss of two of its own and the team members played their hearts out for their classmates.
"They played harder than I thought they would be able to this week," said Black Knight head coach Ben Murphy. "We are a young team and we fought hard."
Before the contest began, the two teams met at midfield and prayed together as one big group.
Once the game started, it was hard-fought throughout the 48 minutes.
Despite the high number of points scored, it was defense that played a major role. That was especially true at the end of the game.
South Greene scored 20 points in the fourth quarter after taking a 13-12 lead into the final 12 minutes.
"We have struggled on defense," said Rebels head coach Shawn Jones. "They made the plays at the end. We have some athletes on this team."
It was Chuckey-Doak that took the early lead when the Black Knights were able to find the endzone on their first possession of the game. Julius Montgomery capped the 10-play drive with a 1-yard scoring run. The extra point failed.
Bryce Malone had two big runs in the drive for Chuckey-Doak. He had an 11-yarder and a 23-yard run to push the ball down field.
South Greene did not take long to respond to falling behind by six points. Jalyn Shuffler scored from 49 yards out on the second play of the drive for the Rebels.
Shuffler scored three times on the night and was the leading rusher with 134 yards on the ground.
The Rebels converted the extra point and took the 7-6 lead with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter.
Those two touchdowns were all the scoring in the first half of the game. Both defenses came up with big turnovers in the first half to kill any scoring chances.
Chuckey-Doak intercepted Scott Susong twice before halftime and the Rebels forced a fumble as the Black Knights looked as if they would score.
After the interception by Jonathan Greene, Chuckey-Doak used a 13-play drive to move the ball down to the South Greene 1. CDHS fumbled the ball away on second-and-goal.
Montgomery had two runs for over 15 yards during the possession. His second big run was a power run until he neared the goal line where he lept over a South Greene defender.
Montgomery finished with 98 yards rushing on the night in the loss.
South Greene was able to add to its lead during its second possession of the second half. Once again, the touchdown was set up by a long run by Shuffler.
With the ball on the Rebels' 37, Shuffler broke loose for a 44-yard run down the near sideline. Two plays later, Tra Haney found the endzone from 11-yards out. The extra point failed and South Greene led 13-6 with 4:54 remaining in the third quarter.
It was now time for a big play by the Black Knight offense. On the second play of the drive, Logan Collins connected with Rodney Ramsey with a quick hitting pass that Ramsey broke for a 73-yard touchdown.
Ramsey caught the ball and broke right up the middle of the field and none of the Rebels were able to catch him. The conversion failed and the score was 13-12.
The Black Knights then recovered an onsides kick, but could not take advantage of the opportunity.
That is when Susong took over the game. He broke down the Chuckey-Doak defense repeatedly. He made it hard for the Black Knights the rest of the game.
"At halftime, we made adjustments," said Jones. "We thought they had gotten into Scott's head with the two interceptions. They could not stop Scott's running."
Susong rushed for 92 yards in the second half after only getting six in the first, He threw for 96 in the opening half.
Despite that, Chuckey-Doak regained the lead with just over five minutes left in the contest. Montgomery burst through the Rebels' defense for a 35-yard touchdown.
That is when the South Greene defense came alive. Kenan Wilhoit scored the next touchdown when he returned an interception 30 yards.
The final score was also set-up by a South Greene interception. Haney got that one and returned it 55 yards down to the 10 yard line.
Shuffler closed out the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown with just over a minute left.
