A Greene County man was charged with attempted first-degree murder and other offenses by Hawkins County authorities in connection with a shooting incident early Saturday near Rogersville.

Brad William Fortner, 34, of 700 Links Mill Road, Greeneville, was charged by Hawkins County deputies with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of felony reckless endangerment and aggravated burglary, according to reports in The Kingsport Times-News on Saturday.

Fortner allegedly shot Brian Heath Kester, 39, inside Kester's 230 Klepper Estates Drive residence just south of Rogersville, the newspaper reported.

Hawkins County Sheriff Roger Christian said Fortner gained entry to the residence which was occupied by his ex-girlfriend, Norma Peters, her 18-year-old daughter, and Peters' current boyfriend, Kester.

"We're alleging that the suspect, ex-boyfriend of Norma Peters, came into the residence at which time the new boyfriend heard a noise and got up to investigate it," Hawkins County Sheriff Roger Christian told The Times-News.

"As he (Kester) exited the bedroom, he encountered Mr. Fortner. We believe there was an altercation, shots rung out and the victim was struck five times in and around the chest area," the report said.

Fortner was being held in the Hawkins County Jail under $200,000 bond pending arraignment today in Hawkins County General Sessions Court.

"As of right now we can only speculate on the motive, but it's early in the investigation and I'm sure there's going to be more information come to the surface about this when we've had a chance to talk to everybody again," Hawkins County Sheriff Roger Christian told the The Times-News on Saturday.
