MORRISTOWN -- The Walters State Senators basketball team survived a home scare Monday night and escaped with a 90-87 victory over the visiting Clinton (S.C.) Golden Bears.

With the win, the Senators have won their opening two games of the year, while the Golden Bears fall to 1-2 for the year.

Sophomore Kyle Upton led Walters State with 13 points in the contest, while fellow sophomores Marsalis Malone and John Holleman each added 12 points in the win. Desmond Crisp tallied 10 points, and Trey Payne finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

The Senators return to action Saturday when they travel to Harriman for their TCCAA conference opener at Roane State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

The 11th-ranked Lady Senators opened their season Monday night in style with an 86-47 victory over Clinton (S.C.) Junior College.

The win was the 42nd straight regular season victory for the Lady Senators, dating back to January of 2008 and it was also the 34th straight home win. The last home loss under Coach Dave Kragel came on Feb. 10, 2007.

Sophomore guards Shy Marsh and LaKrystle Goss led the way in the victory for Walters State with 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Goss added in six rebounds and six assists in the win. Sophomore post Patrice Talley added 11 points and eight rebounds, and redshirt freshman forward Jama Hammontree tacked on 10 points in her first action as a Lady Senator.

Walters State will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on the Lady Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
