South Greene and Greeneville picked up season opening soccer victories Tuesday afternoon, but the Chuckey-Doak boys came out on the short end of a bout with Tri-Cities Christian.
REBELS BLANK PANTHERS
The South Greene Rebel soccer team opened their season with a district win over Cumberland Gap 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.
The Rebels' first goal came from Eddie Cedillo with an assist from Jackson Scott in the first 10 minutes. It was then Scott's turn to score to put the Rebels up 2-0.
Eddie Cedillo came back in the 28th minute putting the Rebels up 3-0 at the half with a tap off a Cumberland Gap player.
The Rebels didn't back down the second half coming out to double their score. With an assist from defender Spencer Solomon, Joshua Langbein put in the fourth goal of the night. Solomon would find the goal off a corner kick by Jesse Kirschmann, putting the Rebels up 5-0. Jackson Scott placed his second goal of the night in with a pass from Andrew Cedillo.
South Greene Coach Kimberly Shelton credited good work by the South Greene defense of Jason Hardee, Spencer Solomon, Dakota Upton, Joe Shelton, Scott Crocket, Brent Coyler and keeper Will Sherman, who had 11 saves for the night.
"We had some younger players that really stepped up tonight and made some great plays on defense when they needed it most," Shelton said. Assistant Coach Billy Dyer praised the offense for coming out early and taking control of the tempo of the game and never backing down.
The Rebels travel to Newport Friday night to take on Cocke County in a non-district match-up. Game time will be 6 p.m.
BLACK KNIGHTS FALL
The Chuckey-Doak Black Knights suffered a disappointing 2010 season opening loss at home by a score of 5-3 to Tri-Cities Christian Academy.
The Black Knights found themselves down 5-0 at halftime after Tommy Dube put on a scoring clinic notching five first half goals.
The only highlights for the Black Knights occurred in the second half. In the 59th minute freshman Simeon Roberts carried the ball up the left side and sent a high cross into the box that Rowdy Jones took over and headed into the net for a much needed CD goal.
Stephen Clavien sent a rocket into the net from the top of the arch in the 74th minute to set the score at 5-2. Just minutes later freshman, Oscar Valasquez volleyed a Delmar Morales corner kick in for the third Black Knight goal of the night.
"Obviously we need to improve a lot but I am proud of the young guys who never gave up and battled back in the second half," said C-D coach Anna Ricker.
The Black Knights travel to Daniel Boone for a 5 p.m. matchup Thursday.
