Greeneville Sun Publisher John M. Jones III was posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Newspaper Hall of Fame on July 19, 2019, along with two additional newspaper executives.

This video chronicling the impact of Jones’ life and career was played during induction ceremonies at the annual Tennessee Press Association summer meeting in Chattanooga.

Jones was publisher of The Greeneville Sun, expanding his company, Jones Media Inc., into a family-owned group of eight newspapers. Adams Publishing Group acquired Jones Media in 2016. He is unofficially known as “The Father of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.”

(Also inducted into the Hall of Fame were John L. Seigenthaler and George T. Whitley. Seigenthaler was editor, publisher, chairman and CEO of The Tennessean of Nashville; the founding editorial director of USA Today; and a leading proponent of the First Amendment. Whitley worked with The Covington Leader for nearly 57 years, named publisher in 1975, continuing in that post until his retirement in 2003.)
