CHARLOTTE MERKEL

Charlotte Merkel, of Greeneville, passed away Monday at the age of 86.

She was a daughter of the late Claude and Pauline Shepherd and the widow of Robert Merkel.

She was a retired advertising sales representative from The Greeneville Sun and was particularly fond of the John M. Jones family.

Mrs. Merkel was affiliated with the Greene County YMCA, where she volunteered her time for over 45 years. She helped with several transitional phases of the YMCA.

She attended First Church of God.

Survivors include four children: Robert Lee Neas III, Kim Lewis Neas, Rance Paul Merkel, and Christopher Michael Merkel and his wife, Kelly Anette Merkel; grandchildren: Justin Merkel, Haley Merkel, Christian Merkel, Mason Olivia Merkel, Robert Cage Merkel, Micah Caroline Merkel, Angela Dawn Gilmore, Brett Nathaniel Neas, Jesse Kim Neas, Chance Tyler Neas and Sean Michael Neas; seven great-grandchildren; one nephew: Dr. Craig Shepherd and his wife, Natalie, and their children, Eli Shepherd and Ali Shepherd; and several cousins.

The family expressed their deepest appreciation to Charlotte’s caregivers: Mary Miser, Nicole Atnip, Linda Cooper, Wilma Strong, Wendy Nease, Shelia Harrison, Sherry Fann, Kayla Crocker and Mary Whaley.

She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby A. and Dorothy Shepherd.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Doughty-Stevens Chapel. The Rev. Barry Burns will officiate.

Entombment will follow in the Chapel Mausoleum at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and Eli Shepherd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Greene County YMCA.
