Junior Dillon Smith poured in a season-high 20 points off the bench to lead the Tusculum University men’s basketball team to an 84-61 win over Lander University on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena in TU’s home opener.
The Pioneers (3-3) have won three of their last four games including the season sweep over the Bearcats (1-4). Tusculum played a suffocating defense in the second half, limiting Lander to 28 points while shooting 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) in the final 20 minutes.
Smith finished the game shooting 7-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from 3-point territory. He also grabbed four rebounds dished out two assists, had two steals and blocked a shot in 29 minutes of action.
Junior Tariq Jenkins added 17 points and six rebounds, while senior Donovan Donaldson tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Trenton Gibson was 8-of-8 at the free-throw line while posting game-highs of nine rebounds and four assists.
Tusculum will open its 20th South Atlantic Conference season at Anderson University at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
